"CHALLENGE SHIELD" VERSUS LEXTON: At the commencement of the 2000 Season a Shield was introduced for competition between the Lexton Football Netball Club and our Club. The Club winning the most games of football and netball on the days the teams meet during the home-and-away games retains the Shield. We are inviting interested persons to submit suggestions as to what the shield could be named taking into account any relative points that involve both Clubs. Suggestions should be forwarded to the Club. HONOUR BOARDS: The Committee is currently compiling information to complete details for new Honour Boards in our Social Rooms. Andrew Bodman would be pleased to hear from anybody who has copies of Club records showing Executive, Coaches and Best & Fairest winners. SENIOR FOOTBALL: Skipton 16 - 9 - 105 defeated Lexton 11 - 10 - 76 Even though there may have been games where we have played better football during the season, our game against Rokewood Corindhap last Saturday was one of the best for the year. The game was played under finals pressure with a win to the opposition possibly giving them a second chance. Every player responded to our Coach's instructions and the challenge he set for them. The win was even greater when you allow for Kiernan Molloy, Craig Kennedy and Troy Janssens all being out injured and Scott Fletcher unavailable because of school commitments. Rokewood started strongly and led by 9 points at quarter time. With 5 goals to their 2 in the second quarter we were able to gain a 9 point lead at half time. With 6 goals early in the third quarter we looked like taking control only to see the opposition kick 3 towards the end of the quarter setting up an exciting finish to the game. The last quarter was hard fought until we were able to finally gain control and eventually run out 5 goal winners. The win now gives us a 3 game break at the top of the ladder but it is important to remember that we still have to play Illabarook (home), Navarre (away) and Carngham Linton (home), all of whom are in the top five. Better players included Nick Watson in the ruck who continues to improve every game. He was well supported by Mark Kennedy ruck roving and rover Paul Grinstead. The strength and bulk of Tim McKay enabled him to control the play at full forward and his 7 goals were a huge bonus. John Gardner either on the wing or in the forward line used his pace to our advantage and was another of our many good players. Scott Paulke returning from injury was another who had a big influence on the win. Best players: M. Kennedy, N. Watson, T. McKay, P. Grinstead, W. Grace, S. Paulke Goalkickers: T. McKay 7, W. Grace 3, M. Kennedy 2, A. Klutke 2, R. Kennedy 1, T. Boyer 1 RESERVES FOOTBALL: Skipton 4 - 3 - 27 were defeated by Lexton 13 - 16 - 94 A disappointing day for our Reserves who were very undermanned against the top team. Early goals in the first quarter gave us a chance but we were unable to score in the second or third quarters which resulted in us losing by a big margin. With 12 players to return over the next few weeks this side will eventually be very competitive. A great deal of work needs to be done and although the loss is a concern we still retain second position on the ladder. Best players: D. Court, P. Rock, T. Thornton, L. Edmonston Goalkickers: D. Gibson 3, R. O'Brien 1 JUNIOR FOOTBALL, UNDER 16's: Skipton 15 - 15 - 105 defeated Lexton 4 - 2 - 26 Another excellent team effort by our Juniors saw them have a good win against a team that defeated us easily in the first half of the season. With their confidence high, the standard of play continues to improve each week. Daniel Grist led the way with 5 goals and he was well supported by Craig McLean also kicking 5 goals. Best Players: D. Grist, M. Kavanagh, A. Dowling, T. Stewart-Contessa, S. Lodge. Goalkickers: D. Grist 5, C. McLean 5, A. Meek 1, C. Irving 1, A. Dowling 1, J. Sharrock 1, M. Kavanagh 1.
