GRAND FINAL ARRANGEMENTS:
The venue for the Grand Final will be decided this week. Arrangements for our Grand Final celebrations to be held at the Mechanics Hall are under way and details will be announced next week.
The Skipton Senior Football team along with the Senior and Reserves Netball teams won their way into the 2001 Grand Finals to be played on Saturday week. Both the Senior teams went through the Season with only one loss each and have earned the opportunity to play off for the Flag. The Reserves Netball team have played very well in recent weeks to defeat the two teams above them on the ladder and are now playing with a great deal of confidence and also deserve the right to be playing off.
SENIOR FOOTBALL: Skipton 12 - 14 - 86 def Carngham Linton 12 - 8 - 80
In a hard fought game against Carngham Linton at Rokewood last Saturday our Senior team held on to win by six points. Played in blustery conditions, the pressure and intensity of the game affected the skill level but the closeness of the scores kept the crowd involved. The overall team performance was perhaps down on recent weeks but their commitment and endeavour was never questioned and when it counted they stood tall.
The loss of key players Tony Boyer and Paul Grinstead with injuries in the first few minutes of the game caused the need for a number of changes and reduced our interchange bench to only one player. In a low scoring first quarter neither side was able to gain a break and at quarter time Carngham led by five points.
The second quarter continued as in the first with the lead changing on a couple of occasions. Our inaccurate kicking was causing some concern and by half time Skipton had had two more scoring shots but trailed by eight points.
Led by Mark Kennedy he third quarter saw Skipton kick six goals to Carngham’s three which enabled them to take a fifteen point lead at three quarter time. Troy Oldaker’s creative play around the centre was proving to be a bonus and players lifted all over the ground. With Tim McKay marking strongly at full forward he was creating a focal point. The loss of Kiernan Molloy with a shoulder injury midway through the quarter again caused immediate concern but the players were able to retain their momentum.
The final quarter saw both teams only able to kick two goals each including one by Carngham after the siren. The back line has been one of our strengths all Season and this proved again to be the case in this term.
Despite the loss of three players through injury the team was able to withstand the pressure of the opposition and can now go into the Grand Final with some confidence realising that there is still a lot of hard work ahead. The week’s rest will allow the players to be well prepared and time for the injured players to recover.
