BEST AND FAIREST VOTE COUNT: Change of Dates. Because of a clash of dates with the League’s Best & Fairest Count for the Junior grades, the arrangements for our count have been changed. The Senior grades will now be counted after the Carngham Linton game on the 25th August in our Social Rooms. The date of the Seniors Presentation Night will be announced shortly. A decision on the Junior count will be made this week and the parents and players will be advised. Details of the arrangements will be printed in this column next week. NIGHT WITH TOM HAFEY: Former A.F.L.premiership coach, Tom Hafey, will take training on Thursday the 30th August 2001. He will then address players from both the football and netball teams in our Social Rooms. Supporters are most welcome to attend this night. "CHALLENGE SHIELD" VERSUS LEXTON: At the commencement of the 2000 Season a Shield was introduced for competition between the Lexton Football Netball Club and our Club. The Club winning the most games of football and netball on the days the teams meet during the home-and-away games retains the Shield. We are inviting interested persons to submit suggestions as to what the shield could be named taking into account any relative points that involve both Clubs. Suggestions should be forwarded to the Club. HONOUR BOARDS: The Committee is currently compiling information to complete details for new Honour Boards in our Social Rooms. Andrew Bodman would be pleased to hear from anybody who has copies of Club records showing Executive, Coaches and Best & Fairest winners. SENIOR FOOTBALL: Skipton 11 - 18 - 84 defeated Illabarook 10 - 12 - 72 In excellent conditions, last week’s game against Illabarook was a hard fought affair with the skill level of both teams affected by the pressure put on them by the opposition. Skipton started off well with a five goal to two first quarter and held an early break. Mark Kennedy was moved into the forward line and kicked three to become a focal point. Nick Watson was rucking strongly and took a number of marks in defence. Scoring in the second quarter was difficult for both teams with the ball being continually cleared by both defences. Graeme Lench was another playing an attacking game from the back flank and ran the ball into our forward line. Skipton was able to go in at half time with a handy 27 point lead. Illabarook came out after half time and showed that they were determined to stay in the game. With both teams going in hard for the ball the game was not of a very high standard with the ball being turned over to the opposition particularly with poor kicking. Rod Kennedy on the wing was proving to be one of our better players. Four goals to the opposition's two saw the lead reduced to 13 points and an exciting last quarter was promised. The first half of the last quarter saw Illabarook in attack regularly and with strong play appeared to be gaining control of the game. A goal from a mark by Tim McKay at the twenty minute point followed up by another one by Scott Paulke enabled Skipton to break their momentum and they finally ran out winners by 12 points. Although not a very impressive win the game was played under great pressure with Illabarook keen to hold onto a top position in the five. This will be the type of opposition we can expect over the next few weeks leading into and during the finals. A number of players were down a little on form but that speaks well of the efforts of their team mates. The win gives some revenge for the loss earlier in the Season, the only one so far. With a three game break at the top of the ladder the Seniors have a rest on the first weekend of the forthcoming finals and then play the second semi-final at Rokewood on Saturday the 8th of September. Before that we have two more hard games against top opposition in Navarre (away) and Carngham Linton (home). Best players: M. Kennedy, N. Watson, R. Kennedy, J. Gardner, G. Lench, T. Boyer. Goalkickers: M. Kennedy 4, S. Paulke 2, G. Lench 1, R. Kennedy 1, J. Gardner 1, T. McKay 1, W. Grace. RESERVES FOOTBALL: Skipton 10 - 7 - 67 defeated Illabarook 5 - 11 - 41 Back on the winning list, the Reserves have consolidated second place on the ladder. Led by experienced players in Gavan Corbett, Ross O’Brien and Daryl Gibson, back from injury, they led all day and had a 26 point break at the finish. Although there are still two games to go the Reserves cannot lose their position on the ladder and will play in the qualifying final at Avoca on Saturday 1st September. Best players: G. Corbett, C. Cassar, R. O’Brien, T. Gardiner, D. Gibson. Goalkickers: R. O’Brien 2, J. Milenkovic 2, D. Court 1, J. Peeters 1, C. Shelton 1, C. Cassar 1, J. Gibson 1. JUNIOR FOOTBALL, UNDER 16's: Skipton 0 - 2 - 2 were defeated by Illabarook 10 - 11 - 71 Our Juniors Struggled against a stronger opposition but continually tried throughout the game. An indication of their improvement is that they were not able to field a full side against Illabarook in the first round and were defeated by over 100 points. Although this is disappointing for the players the loss was far less this time and their coach Dean Sheridan was pleased and encouraged by their efforts. Best Players: D. Grist. B. Slater, M. Thornton, S. Davis, A. Meek Goalkickers: nil SENIOR NETBALL Skipton 96 def Illabarook 8 The Senior team had a very convincing win against a very under-manned opposition and retained their undefeated record.
