SENIOR FOOTBALL: Skipton 16 - 11 - 107 defeated Carngham Linton 14 - 8 - 92 With a very large crowd in attendance at Skipton last Saturday all was set for a close hard game and the supporters were not disappointed. Considering the amount of rain during the week the oval was in very good condition and the northerly wind had little effect on the ability of the teams to score at either end. Even though Skipton led at the end of the first three quarters the lead was never big enough to feel that they had the game in hand. The first quarter saw both back lines on top with the ball being continually rebounded by the opposition defenders. Mark Kennedy was causing the opposition concern with his ability to make position and take strong overhead marks. An injury to Stephen McKerrow forced him to leave the oval and he was replaced in the ruck by John Gardner who continued on from where he left off last week. At quarter time Skipton held a narrow eight point lead. With both teams going in hard for the ball at the start of the second quarter the umpires were forced to take control and free kicks were being handed out freely. Tempers flared on a number of occasions and the crowd were becoming very vocal in support of their teams. An incident midway through the quarter saw Joseph Kavanagh kick a goal and then be awarded another kick before the ball was bounced that resulted in another goal. This opened up the biggest lead of the game and Skipton appeared to be gaining control. However were not to be denied and goals late in the second quarter saw the lead back to fifteen points. Scott Paulke was showing great leadership and was continually seen at the bottom of the pack competing for the ball. Graeme Lench showed his ability to read the play and carried the ball out of defence on a number of occasions. At half time Wayne Grace urged the players to remain calm, and focussed on the game. The players carried out his instructions and the third quarter was similar to the first with neither side able to gain total control. With two Carngham players sent from the field by the umpires, they were forced to crowd Skipton's forward line and this made scoring very difficult. Poor kicking into the forward line did not help. At three quarter time Skipton's lead was seventeen points and an exciting last quarter was expected. The beginning of the last quarter saw Skipton going on attack on a number of occasions with an opportunity to open up a bigger lead. Poor kicking again saw the ball rebounded by the defenders. With a four goal break midway through the quarter Skipton appeared to have the game in their control but late goals to Carngham reduced the final winning margin to fifteen points. With only one loss in the home and away games the Senior team has finished clear on top of the ladder and has earned the week's rest. The Match Committee did not risk playing Tony Boyer, Nick Watson or Troy Janssens and the extra week should ensure that they will be available for the Second Semi-Final to be played at Rokewood on Saturday week. This makes their task difficult considering the performance of the team particularly over the last four weeks but the depth of players available for selection has been a plus for the Club all Season. Best players: G. Lench, K. Kennedy, S. Paulke, J. Gardner, P. Grinstead, S. Fletcher, M. Hutt Goalkickers: : T. McKay 4, W. Grace 4, M. Kennedy 3, K. Molloy 2, Joseph Kavanagh 2, S. Paulke 1. RESERVES FOOTBALL: Skipton 8 - 8 - 56 were defeated by Carngham Linton 9 - 11 - 65 In a game where neither side could gain control Skipton were finally defeated but far from disgraced. The first quarter saw neither side able to gain control and both back lines were under pressure. Carngham Linton played the more direct football in the second quarter which resulted in them opening up a fourteen point lead at half time. The second half was similar to the first with neither side able to gain a break and the scores remained close. Skipton were able to get within one goal of the opposition on a couple of occasions but could not gain the lead and were finally defeated by eleven points. Gavan Corbett was strong in defence and Robert Draffin gave plenty of drive in the forward line. Josh Cahill and Daniel Milenkovic were two of a number of other players who tried hard throughout the game. The Reserves have finished second on the ladder and can look forward to the finals series with some confidence. They will play Carngham Linton again next Saturday in the Qualifying Final at Avoca.
