"Skipton Notes" from the "Lexton Plains Footballer" June 7th 2003
Round 6, May 31st 2003, Skipton versus Carngham-Linton
With all our football teams losing last Saturday it was left to the netballers to give us some reason to celebrate. Wins in the Reserves and Under 14 were the only successes in what was otherwise a lean day.
After three good quarters the Seniors were not able to hold out a fast finishing opposition and suffered their first loss for the season. Incentive award winners were Bill Molloy, Paul Grinstead, Rod Kennedy, Cameron Postlethwaite who certainly impressed in his first game and Adam Slater who was playing his 50th Senior game. Other award winners were Paul Grinstead (Peter Lalor Hotel), Bill Molloy (21 Arms), James Collins (Ballarat Barber Shop) and Troy Wickham (Pinkys Pizza).
After trailing all day the Reserves were unlucky to go down by a point. By keeping the opposition scoreless in the last quarter they lifted their play and could well have came away with the points if the game had gone a bit longer. Award winners were Ryan Millgate (Golden Age Hotel), Mark Coventry (21 Arms), Matthew Gill (Skipton Hotel) and Brad Moyle (Pinkys Pizza)
Our Juniors struggled against a stronger opponent but as always kept on trying throughout the game. The return of a number of players from injury should help them over the next few weeks. Award winners were Jess Thornton (Pinkys Pizza), Steven Lodge (McDonalds) and Rhys Haley (Ballarat Barber Shop)
In an exciting finish the Senior netballers were beaten by a goal thrown right on final time. It was a very close game throughout in which the result could have gone either way. Award winners were Trudy Boyer (Burrumbeet Hotel), Christie Fletcher (Golden Age Hotel) and Rebecca Evans (21Arms). The Reserves continued their recent good form and had a very good win. Natalie Drake (Peter Lalor Hotel), Dione Edmonston (Skipton Hotel) and Koby Sturgeon (21 Arms) were the award winners.
In the Juniors the Under 17's were beaten but not disgraced as they continue to improve each week. The awards were won by Ashley Layley (Pinkys Pizza) and Courtney Layley (McDonalds). The Under 12's had a very exciting game and in a thriller won by one goal with award winners being Karis Britton (Pinkys Pizza) and Ashlee Krone (McDonalds)
The big winners of the day were the players in both the Under 12 football and netball games. The organisers of these games deserve a pat on the back for their efforts as we have the opportunity to see the future players of our Clubs play (Skipton won the netball and Carngham the football not that the scores really matter)
Congratulations to Abby Stimson who today plays her 50th Junior game
Today we welcome Illabarook to our Club and can expect some tough opposition in all games. Make sure you join them for a drink after the game. See you there!
