Skipton versus Ararat Eagles @ Skipton
"Rovin' Rambler Report"
SENIOR FOOTBALL
The 2003 Season kicked off last Saturday with the football teams all winning against the Ararat Eagles. The Seniors won by 94 points, Reserves by 72 and the Juniors by 135.
Playing in near-perfect conditions the Seniors met a much improved opposition who played with a great deal of enthusiasm. Although the scores might indicate a one-sided affair that was not the case, as the Eagles showed a lot of spirit throughout the game.
The beginning of the first quarter was a battle of the back lines with neither side gaining ascendancy. Midway through the first quarter the Skipton centre line got on top and was creating opportunities for the forward line. Nick Watson was winning in the ruck and gave the on-ballers first use of the ball with Paul Grinstead, Mathew Battistello and Tim Mckay kicking goals. Adam Slater came into the game late in the quarter with three goals, giving Skipton a 35 point lead at quarter-time.
An early goal to McKay opened the scoring in the second quarter. Play became scrambly with players being affected by the warm conditions. Rowan O’Callaghan was playing well with strong running play and Craig Kennedy was leading the way at fullback. He was well supported by Aaron Klutke. Playing his first game, Kris Johnson was winning on the wing and giving drive. Two goals to McKay and one to Troy Ferrier gave Skipton a 53 point lead at the break.
Klutke moved to the forward line after half-time and along with Luke Hills was creating plenty of opportunities. Rod Kennedy was playing at centre-half-back and defended strongly.
First-gamer 17 year old James Shelton impressed with his accurate kicking to position and general team play. Bill Molloy was playing well in the back line and Slater continued his good form up forward.
The last quarter was a sluggish affair with the standard of play slipping. A number of players were rotated on and off the bench as the warm conditions took their toll. Skipton managed four goals to the Eagles one, giving the home team a 94 point win
COACH'S COMMENTS - Tim McKay
“It was a pleasing win first up. Our lack of practice matches was apparent in some of our play. The form of our new player was pleasing and I believe we will be able to blend into a very competitive team again.”
RESERVES
The Reserves also had a very good win with a number of new players standing out. After taking a short time to settle down four quick goals gave Skipton a 24 point lead at quarter time. Ryan Adamson and Anthony Bibby were playing well across the centre and Ryan Millgate was leading the defence.
The second quarter was even with both sides kicking three goals. Jason Gibson was creating plenty of opportunities in the forward line. Joseph Kavanagh was giving plenty of drive out of the centre with his effective team play.
An eight goal to one second half resulted in the team
having an impressive 72 point win. Coach Mick Shelton was pleased with the overall team performance which should see a number of players pushing for Senior selection early in the Season
UNDER 16½ FOOTBALL
Although short on numbers the Junior team ran out big winners by 135 points. Led by their Captain, Michael Kavanagh, with nine goals and Jess Thornton with four all the players contributed during the game.
Coach Dean Sheridan was very pleased with the effort of the team and believes that with a couple of players still to return the boys can look forward to a good year although numbers may well be an ongoing problem
